Teachers at Liberty continue to go above and beyond the call of duty. Several faculty members speak at conferences regularly regarding their area of expertise, as well as write for publication.

Dr. Jody Vogelzang, who teaches biology, forensics, and nutrition at Liberty, is one such teacher. She writes a regular column in a research publication — Vogelzang writes the history of the research area and another writer interviews a registered dietitian currently involved in that area of research.

“I have always found the history of science interesting,” Vogelzang said.

Dr. Vogelzang also presents to both private and public school teachers. She has also worked this year to convert her AP Biology class to an inquiry format and has incorporated the ideas into several presentations as well.

Her published articles in “The Digest” this year include the “History of Lipid Research,” “The History of Probiotic Research,” and “The History of Obesity Research.”

This year Dr. Vogelzang has also led presentations at various conferences. Her topic, “Using Nutrition Concepts to Teach Core Classes,” was presented at the Association of Christian Schools International. She also spoke on the issue of “Does Inquiry Really Increase Understanding – A Case Study” at the Regional Conference on Advancement for Science Teachers. She will also travel to Philadelphia in March to speak at the National Science Teachers Association on “Using Superheroes to Connect Animal Structure and Function.”

Liberty is so gratified to have outstanding teachers like Dr. Vogelzang who are experts in their field and are providing leadership and guidance to their colleagues, as well as their students
