History Class Goes Above and Beyond

The ingenuity and creative thinking of Liberty teachers allows for phrases such as “Bahama Bucks” and “U.S. History” to occupy the same sentence.

U.S. History teacher Zak Bowles recently gave a lesson on the American Revolution that his students will never forget.

Bowles told his students if they focused and worked hard on an intense week of schoolwork that he would reward them with a prize on Friday.

After taking a quiz that Friday, Bowles led his students out to the football field. He divided them into two teams and had the teams stand five yards across from each other. Bowles explained that when studying the American Revolution, “we learned about the style of fighting used by the English army back then. The armies would take the battlefield and stand face to face with one another and take turns shooting at each other.”

Bowles wanted his students to experience how soldiers fought during that time and the intensity of their close range combat. A parent bought for the class 120 perfectly made snowballs, and students took two snowballs each, and on command, took turns throwing them at each other as if they were fighting in the revolution.

The lesson turned out to be a huge success and Bowles notes “it turned into a really fun motivational tool and history lesson.”

Creative lesson plans such as the American Revolution snowball fight allow students to learn and experience history through a memorable approach.
