In Houston on Saturday at the TAPPS Class 4A regional tournament, our boys’ basketball team fought hard against No. 1 ranked Houston Westbury Christian., but came up short, 44-36.

Liberty did well at slowing down Westbury’s bigger and more athletic players, Scofield said.

“I was proud of our kids,” Scofield said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well, but we did just about everything else.”

Christian Scofield led Liberty (24-14) with 17 points.

Liberty ends its season and Richard Scofield, the Warriors’ head coach since 2003, heads into retirement.

Before that, he spent seven years as head coach at Ryan and led the Raiders to a state championship in 2000.

“I’ve coached for 40 years, 36 as a head coach, and in that time I’ve walked off the court after the last game all but one time being the loser,” he said. “So it’s a familiar feeling. It’s an unwanted feeling. This is a great group of kids. You can’t always win them all.”

He said coaching his last game stirred a wide mix of emotions: “some relief, some satisfaction, some sadness.”
