Liberty sent 50 seventh and eighth grade students to the Fort Worth Regional Science and Engineering Fair (FWRSEF) earlier this month. Students from Tarrant, Denton, and surrounding counties competed in both high school and junior high divisions in different categories of science, such as animal science, chemistry, environmental management, medicine and health, physics, etc.
“We had a wonderful showing at the fair,” said Heather Lytle, science department chair.
The FWRSEF judges evaluated each category of science and awarded first to third place in each category. These projects advance to the Texas Science and Engineering Fair in San Antonio, April 10-12.
In past years, Liberty has sent between four to 10 students to State.
“We’re very excited to have eight students advancing this year,” said Lytle. “It is a wonderful experience to design an experiment, collect data, and draw conclusions, and then to have that project be competitive and recognized at the school, regional, and state level.
“I want to give a special thanks to the students’ encouraging teachers – Jamie Michalek, Barbara Snowden, and Stephanie Ritter – and to the students’ supportive parents, ” said Lytle.
Various sponsors also recognized their favorite projects with “Special Awards,” and those awards with their Liberty winners are:
Devon Energy Award – Harry Asprey
Radio Shack Award; EPA Award – Tiffany Lu
Society of Allied Weight Engineers; Society of Flight Test Engineers – Ian Harrington
The Liberty winners of Category Awards who advance to the Texas Science and Engineering Fair in April are:
Biochemistry – third place – Jack Lytle
Biochemistry – second place – Brian Ogden

Medicine and Health – third place – Brooke Hadley
