On Wednesday, April 21, the Texas American Legion Boys State selected five Liberty Christian juniors to participate in their summer leadership program.

“We are extremely proud of these young men and their accomplishments,” said Upper School Principal Ed Cook. “They are truly leaders among their peers and are deserving of the opportunity to attend Boys State this summer.”

The program will take place in June at the University of Texas at Austin. Participating in the program are juniors Hunter Dansby, Colby Edson, Bryce Garoutte, Eric Heidelman, and Justin Woodall. Each candidate interviewed with an American Legion representative, and was evaluated on the following criteria: desire to attend, leadership abilities, scholastic achievement, character, competitive spirit, and ability to work with others.

Garoutte said, “I am very excited about Boys State.

“The leaders who interviewed us were very friendly and inviting.

“This program seems like it will be a very rewarding and fascinating opportunity.”

Boys State is designed to help students gain a better understanding of the realistic operations of government. The program allows students to gain knowledge in a nontraditional learning environment. Rather than a week of classroom lectures, the program emphasizes participation and personal experience.

Along with students from across the state, these juniors will learn about the election process in this program and elect their own state officials including a house of representatives, a senate, and a governor. Those chosen for these positions hold a session on the last day of the program at the State of Texas Capitol building in the House of Representatives and Senate chambers.
