Winning Award

Liberty football celebrated a big win in their first game of the season last Friday, defeating state champions Pilot Point. In the days after the game, Liberty was presented with the “Army Strong Team of the Week.” Local officials with the Army, who are partnering with TexasFootball.com, will present this award at Liberty’s Sept. 10 pep rally at 9 a.m. The Army recognized Liberty for demonstrating the qualities exhibited in the Army – leadership, commitment to excellence, and a desire to make a difference as a team.

The award stated, “In a matchup of two 2009 state finalists, TAPPS Division II runner-up Liberty Christian knocked off UIL 2A DI state champ Pilot Point, 50-35. Liberty Christian’s running game dominated from beginning to end. The Warriors piled up 334 rushing yards, including 193 by Jared Lawson.”

Congratulations Warriors!

Coach Greg Price’s Outlook on the Season
Even before the award was announced, Liberty Athletic Director/Head Football Coach Greg Price was optimistic about the season. He quoted Joshua 1:6–9 in the first pep rally of the year and encouraged his team to be “strong and courageous.”

He said, “We have a motivated group of young players who are ready to take the reins of the strong tradition of Warrior football. I am proud of the way they have worked and trained for this season, and I am excited to see what this team can do when we line up against another opponent.”

Regarding this year’s team, he said, “We have a very fast defense. I think we have the size to stop the power run game and the speed to defend the prevalent spread offense. Our two biggest concerns offensively are the line and the quarterback positions. Junior Josh Cousins has won the quarterback job and had a great first outing. Our offensive line has made drastic improvements in these three weeks, posting in the game with Pilot Point, 358 rushing yards, 108 passing yards, and no sacks.

“I would say that our questions are being answered. I am optimistic about our chances of success, but I know that our competition in district is going be very, very tough. We are going to suit up anyway and give them all they want and then some. Either way I think this season is going to be exciting,” he said.

A Look Back to August’s Training Camp at Camp Copass
After moving this year from TAPPS 4A to 5A, the Warrior football team began preparing for the season at Camp Copass, a camp that has become a tradition in Liberty football. The camp is a small campground in Denton off of Lake Lewisville, and according to Price, the boys go there as individuals and they come back as a team. This experience held true this year as well.

“We had an outstanding summer, with the most participation we have ever had in summer conditioning,” said Price. “Training during camp was very hot, but in my opinion, the heat helped develop more mental and physical toughness. We practiced three times a day with agilities, intense contact drills, precision execution, and extreme conditioning. I am convinced the boys are willing to pay the price it will take to walk off the field the last time with no apologies and no regrets.”

Camp Copass is tough physically, but there is a spiritual side to the Warrior training camp. Camp Copass provides a place where the team can get closer to the Lord. After their first week of camp, Price wrote in an e-mail to staff, “We have had an awesome time sharing the Word with the boys, and the Spirit of the Lord has really moved. We eagerly await Coach Bowles to come out tomorrow night and give an invitation, as we do every year, and I believe we will see the Lord at work. Please pray that the Lord will reveal himself, put his hand of protection over them as they train, and that these boys will make him first in their lives.”

In a later e-mail, Price wrote, “Coach Bowles shared his heart last night, and two young men stood and accepted Christ.” He went on to say that at “Dad’s day we had an awesome time of prayer. We gave the dads ‘Love Letters’ that their wives and their sons had written to them. I started crying as I told the dads about the letters, and as I was telling them, their eyes started filling with tears. Anyway enough crying, but it was an awesome day. We practiced football too.”
