The Warrior cross country teams had a great start to their season this past weekend as 35 Liberty athletes competed in four divisions at the Greenhill 6-Mile Relay.
Out of 46 teams, the varsity boys placed second! The varsity team matched its best all-time finish, and was led by sophomore Dereck Woodcock, junior Cal McMillan, senior Fabian Melo, and junior Ryan Leaverton.
Varsity girls placed their best in the school’s history, achieving fourth place out of 33 teams! The varsity team was led by junior Sydney Brynn, senior Rachel Albert, senior Nikki Marsden, and junior Maile Curbo.
The Middle School teams had strong finishes and were led on the boys’ side by eighth-graders Sebastian Melo, Taylor McCarley, Travis Funderburk, and Jack Lytle, and on the girls’ side by eighth-graders Miranda Glasser, Natalie Belokin, and Sydney Goodson, and seventh-grader Kennedy Collins.
Lisa Woodcock, mother of runner Dereck Woodcock, said, “The team is off to a good start; they are in a healthy place.
“I have never seen a more dedicated team – I think of how they work extra hard and are very well-prepared, running by moonlight before the sun comes up in the mornings before school starts.”
Their workouts and preparation will show this weekend, as the Middle School teams run at Carrollton Christian tonight, and the varsity competes tomorrow, Sept. 4, at Northlakes Park in Denton, at 8 a.m.
