Swimmers and Divers Compete at Regional Meet
By Kelley Currin – Head Swim/Dive Coach
The Warrior swimmers and divers competed in the North Regional Championships recently at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium. The team performed extremely well, and 10 Warriors will advance to the state meet this Friday, Feb. 11, and Saturday, Feb. 12 in San Antonio.
The team was led by sophomore diver Bradley Christenson, who easily won the 1-meter dive event, outscoring his nearest opponent by several hundred points. Christenson will compete for the title of Division 1 State Champion in San Antonio next week.
Four out of five Warrior relays qualified to compete in San Antonio. At regionals, the girls 200 medley relay, consisting of freshman Allie Martin and juniors Marcy Morgan, Marissa Marrs, and Megan Perley finished ninth in a season best time of 2:25.50. The girls 200 freestyle relay made up of Perley, Martin, Marrs, and senior Taylor Gilstrap also qualified in a season-best time of 2:00.72.
For the boys, the medley relay consisting of junior Steven Murphy, junior Jorrden Sheridan, senior Alex Christenson, and freshman Christian Palmer qualified seventh in a time of 2:05.86. Sheridan, Christenson, Palmer, and Murphy also made up the 200 freestyle relay, which also qualified in a time of 1:47.85.
Martin will compete in the 200 freestyle for the Warriors and A. Christenson will compete in the 50 freestyle. Both swam their season best times in their events. Martin qualified in ninth place, and A. Christenson is seeded fourth in the 50.
Overall, the team fared well against some very tough teams, and the swimmers proved they can compete against the best swimmers in the area. The move into the top division this year has challenged the team to train harder to be in the best physical condition. The Warrior swimmers look forward to the challenge that awaits them in San Antonio.
