Families Invited to the Theatre’s “Welcome to the Scheherazade”
By Kirk Holland
Theatre Teacher, Director, and Playwright
Welcome to the Sch … Schehehehe … Cher … Scheherara … how do you even say that word?
Pronounced “Share-i-zah-dee,” “Welcome to the Scheherazade” is not only the title of this year’s spring show, but it is also a salutation received by any guest who pays a visit to the upscale Manhattan apartment building named after the Arabian Princess who saved her life for a 1,001 nights by spinning intriguing tales.
But more interesting than the name of the building are the tenants of the building. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill New Yorkers (as though there were such a thing). They all have their own secret – they are all members of a sprawling society of literary characters. That’s right, within the walls of the Scheherazade, hiding in plain sight, are a few princesses, a malicious pirate captain and his green-scaled wife, a pale and jumpy front desk clerk, a doctor who defies death, a woman more comfortable flying on a broomstick than riding in a taxi, and a whole smattering of others. Sound interesting so far? Let’s add another layer. Our friends at the Scheherazade find their very existence in peril when they discover that one of their own is attempting to put them all back in their books.
More than 50 students have been working for months both onstage and backstage to bring this story to life, and it’s like nothing you’ve seen before. Why? Because there are students in this show who are stretching out of their comfort zone and trying something new and exciting. Want to see basketball players act? Soccer players dance? Academics performing the Macarena? It’s all here.
Never been to one of our shows? Then start now. Come support a Fine Arts department that’s growing and thriving right along with our phenomenal Athletic and Academic departments, all three working together to enrich the lives of the students with whom God has entrusted us.
It’s a mystery that stretches from the 1920s to our modern day, and you don’t want to miss out!
