Lady Warriors Softball Hosts Tournament

Liberty Christian hosted the Argyle/Liberty Christian Preseason Classic Softball Tournament last weekend, Feb. 17–19. Liberty participated in pool play games on Friday against Sherman (a 4A school ranked sixth), Vernon, and Olney. Liberty beat Sherman 1-0, lost to Vernon 5-4, and beat Olney 12-2.
With one loss in pool play, Liberty placed second in its bracket on Saturday. Liberty played Burleson Centennial Saturday morning and lost 1-2. Its next opponent was All Saints Episcopal, and Liberty won 7-2. Liberty’s final game on Saturday night was again against Vernon, and Liberty won, 10-3. Liberty had four wins and two losses for the tournament.
Liberty pitcher, senior Kristen Wheeler, pitched all six games. Head softball coach Stephanie Ritter said, “Wheeler did an outstanding job, striking out 20 batters.”
Ritter added that sophomore Anna Payne hit a homerun over the fence, along with six base hits and one double. Senior Kasi Sallee had six base hits; senior Savannah Ewing had five base hits, one double, and one triple; junior Kelsie Finch had four doubles, one triple, and one single; Wheeler had four singles and two doubles; and junior McKenzie Middle had four singles.
In addition, senior Caitlyn Spain made a diving catch in leftfield during the last game against Vernon to finish the game.
“Liberty’s varsity softball team did a great job for its first tournament of the season,” Ritter said. “I am very proud of all of my 14 girls who came out and supported their teammates on and off the field.”
