Liberty Baseball: Three-Game Recap
The Warriors improved their district record to 7-0 last week with its win over Nolan Catholic, but ended up going 1-2 during the week with non-district losses to Southwest Christian and Lake Dallas.
In the Southwest Christian game, head coach Johnny Isom said that the breakdowns on defense gave the Eagles enough runs to seal the game with a final score of 4-3.
Seniors Chad Nack and Neal Bohannon collected two hits each, and senior Trevor Simms hit a big time two-run bomb that gave the Warriors an early lead.
Isom said. “Trevor’s ball was well hit. I don’t think anyone could see his ball once it left the bat, but everyone heard it hit the bleachers in left center.”
The outstanding pitchers in the game were Nack and junior Zach Wilson. “They did a great job of giving us a chance to win the game,” said Isom. “They combined to strike out 10 Eagle batters.”
In the Nolan Catholic game, the Warriors traveled to Fort Worth and beat the Nolan Catholic Vikings by a score of 11-0 and improved their district record to 7-0.
Isom said, “This was our most complete game of the season. We pitched well, hit well, ran the bases well, and played cleaned defense. All phases of the game were clicking tonight. It was fun to watch.”
Nack and Simms each collected three hits on the day. Sophomore Foster Ford reached base in all three of his at-bats, hitting two doubles and walking his third at-bat.
“We had three two-out RBIs that would be back breakers early.” Isom said. “Foster’s two out, RBI double in the second inning set the tone for the entire offense. Foster is seeing the ball about as well as anyone in our lineup right now.”
Outstanding pitcher for the Nolan game was Simms, who earned the win on the day throwing a six inning complete game shutout against the Vikings of Nolan. Simms struck out eight on the day.
“Trevor had it all going today,” Isom said. “He seems to get better and better as the season goes on. He threw hard and threw strikes. Great combo.”
In the Lake Dallas game, the Warriors gave up seven in the first inning and lost to Lake Dallas by the 10-run rule in five innings.
Outstanding offensive player in the Lake Dallas game was Bohannon. Isom said, “He was our lone bright spot offensively, collecting two of our three hits on the day.
Outstanding pitcher for the Lake Dallas game was senior Eric Heidelman.
“Heidelman did a great job of slowing down their offense and keeping us in the game,” Isom said. “Nack didn’t throw as bad as the boxscore looks. I felt like there were some really well-placed balls that weren’t hit hard, just hit where we couldn’t get to them. And Eric pitched really well for the next three innings.”
In upcoming games, Liberty plays today at home against Grace Prep at 7 p.m., Tuesday at home against Bishop Lynch at 7 p.m., and Friday at Prestonwood at 7 p.m.
