Boys Basketball Concludes on a High Note
By Lance Burroughs, Assistant Basketball Coach
The Warriors closed out the 2011 district season with an overtime win against Trinity Christian in front of a packed house at LCS. Not only did manager Chance McClure start the ball game, but the Warriors pulled off the win on senior night as Pres McKissack, Hunter Dansby, Kyle Kuykendall, Joe Honeysett, and Eric Heidelman finished out their Liberty careers.
The Warriors finished up district play with a 5-7 record, landing a fourth place in district. For the first round of the playoffs, the Warriors headed south to play against the No. 2 seed Houston St. Thomas. After a hard-fought, double overtime battle, the Warriors fell just short of advancing to the next round. Houston St. Thomas eventually beat Prestonwood in the state finals.
Upon conclusion of the season, the All-District awards were named for TAPPS 5A. Both Kuykendall and Heidelman finished with First Team All-District honors, followed by Dansby who was honored for Second Team All-District. Honeysett, McKissack, and junior post Brad Horton were also on the Honorable Mention Team.
At the banquet, the Warrior Heart was given to Pres McKissack and Hunter Dansby, and
Defensive Player of the Year was awarded to Joe Honeysett. Offensive Player of the Year was given to Eric Heidelman, and the 2011 MVP was Kyle Kuykendall.
The Warriors finished the season with a record of 20-15.
