A group of seventh grade girls from Liberty Christian began a Bible study last summer based on Bethany Hamilton’s book “Soul Surfer,” and they decided that helping others should be a part of their plan.

The girls’ first outreach was at Friends of the Family Thrift Store in Denton on Saturday, Sept. 17. This organization provides compassion and supportive services to those impacted by relationship violence and sexual assault. Its mission is to partner with the community to promote a society free of violence.

At its thrift store, clients and their families shop for both personal and household needs. With the assistance of this group of girls who wanted to help, the store now includes a playroom for children so the parents can shop.

“Friends of the Family simply asked the girls to make the room bright and cheery,” said Liberty parent Tiffany Haertling. “These 11 girls along with two juniors worked great together planning and completing a beautiful room for many children to enjoy.”

The girls met the week before to prepare, and last Saturday, a white room became an inviting yellow room with multicolored rainbows, large smiling flowers with blue and purple petals, a dazzling orange sunshine, yellow butterflies, a giant smiling bumblebee, green polka dotted frogs, and the words, “Kids Club,” painted in vivid colors.

The girls completed the project by leaving their final impression, their painted handprints artistically decorated on the door.

They look forward to what next month’s mission might be, knowing that leaving the handprint of God’s love is what they have been called to do.

Friends of the Family is hosting a concert on the Courthouse-on-the -Square on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m., and an open house at their new location at 4845 South I35E in Corinth on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 5:30 p.m.

Its thrift store is currently in need of household items like toasters, sets of dishes, silverware, and vacuum cleaners – items that would help a client at Friends of the Family establish a new start in life.
